March 9:
Today I was insistent that we make the most of our day.
Through I unfortunately forgot my camera to take pictures of it so once I get
around to it you will have to see my poor quality camera pictures. We began by
heading out and walking down the first street we came across filled with street
venders. We wandered through there for a while before heading into Marcato
Centrale, Florence’s central market. It was a pretty neat enclosed food market
but unfortunately for us it sold almost exclusively ingredients and little
prepared food. As we wandered we reached Florence’s famed boar statue that
supposedly gives you good luck or something if you rub its nose.
The next landmark we reached was the Duomo a neat square containing one of the prettiest churches I have ever seen. The church is entirely covered in green, pink, and white marble so vibrant and intricate that from afar it looks painted.
We continued around seeing the Piazza della Signoria and the Ponte Veccio before finding a sandwich place and having lunch in front of the Pitti Palace.
After lunch it began to rain so we headed back towards the hostel and got in line for the Uffizi, Florence’s largest museum.
After thoroughly exploring it we were rather tired and hungry. We stopped off at a local sports bar for some burgers and birthday cheesecake before hitting a supermarket for some wine and heading back to the hostel.
That night we met up with a few guys from the hostel for a few drinks before heading to the bar with them. It was a good birthday.
