April 13:
Waking up this morning was about as terrible as you would
expect. They didn’t even dim the lights in our room so the sleep masks were
vital if not wholly effective. We staggered our sleep deprived selves off the
boat and to the Heraklion bus station. From there they had hourly busses to the
city of Rethymno and the next one was at 7:30am. The bus ride lasted about an
hour and a half and consisted of some small reading between my gaping at the
incredible scenery around us. Once we got into town it wasn’t too difficult to
find the Rethymno Youth Hostel. We checked in and immediately got a room. After
some small while in bed resting and nursing power back into our drained
computers we decided to go get some lunch. We were advised as to a place that
was good and cheap so we went there. Pat got a big bowl of fish soup and I had
a Greek salad and a dish that was a sort of stew of lamb, green peppers, tomatoes
and potatoes, which was very nice. The place was right along the beach but we
had been told on the other side of the harbour there was an even nicer beach so
after our meal we set out to find out. It wasn’t a very far walk but the beach
did appear to be of a much higher quality then the close one. It stretched out
for ages and we will have to walk the length of it at a future date. Beach seen, we headed back to the hostel, tired from lack of sleep and a full belly. We
rested until much later when we decided to go out for dinner. We went back to
the same place because we knew it was open 24/7 and got spaghetti balinese and tzatziki.
After that it was home and to bed.
