April 11:
This morning we booked our ferry ticket to Crete. It was an
overnight ferry leaving Athens at 9pm on the 12th and getting into the
Cretan port city of Heraklion at 6am the next morning. We decided that since we
had all day and no plans we would walk down to the water and find the Minoan
Lines offices to pick up our ticket. The water wasn’t on our map of Athens let
alone the right port but we figured we would be fine. After 3 hour we had
traveled what on the map is about 10 kilometers as the crow flies but due to
our wandering was much closer to 15. We did reach the water near the Peace and
Friendship Stadium but soon realized that the port we were looking for, Port
Pireas, was still another 3km away.
We were dehydrated and exhausted and decided to call it a day. We were incredibly fortunate that there was a metro stop by the stadium or we would have had to get a taxi back to the hostel. Thanks to our good fortune we were soon on the metro and a few stops later were back at the hostel. We took a couple hours to rehydrate and relax after our days adventure. Once we regained our fluids and with them our appetites we went out and found a souvlaki place close to us then settled in for our last night in Athens.
