April 9:
We woke up only slightly worse for our activities the
previous night. Once we got going we decided to hike Mount Lycabettus. It is
the tallest point in Athens and is topped with a church, café, and panoramic
viewing platforms.
It is about time I mentioned some interesting things about Greece, the first I would put under the cool category and the second under the irritating one. Firstly, the rock in Athens is marble, it is the rock laying around naturally and it can be really slippery when well worn. The second is that due to the Greeks using a different alphabet to ours, they have all their things named in both Greek and Roman letters. The main issue here is that they don’t do a straight letter-to-letter conversion and so instead you tend to have a few different spellings of any given place. This makes it really hard to say… Google things or do any mapping really. We found the mountain despite its different labeling on our different maps (Wikipedia says it is also called: Lycabettos, Lykabettos or Lykavittos) and after hanging out on top of Athens for a while decided to call it a day and head home. Along the way we stopped to get some cold meds for me and some groceries for us including some delicious, fresh oranges. The weather for the day had been amazing with clear skies and temperatures in the low twenties but the heat and excersise of hiking made us just about ready to sleep once we got back. We rested for a bit and at some point I drifted off. When I got up later we went to Goody’s, a Greek fast food place, for dinner, then called it a night.
